While most western countries consider Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) to be a barbaric form of treatment and have abandoned it in favour of psychotherapeutic methods, in India it is increasingly being used to treat mental depression. Opinions differ, however, about the efficacy of ECT. While one psychiatrist denounces it completely, another defends it, even as he admits that it causes "limited brain damage!".
